Description

The Blue Max (Pour Le Merite) was instituted in 1740, and originally made of gold.  This beautiful reproduction is gold plated with blue enamel to the front side and maintains the early pattern pie-shaped suspension of the 1832-1915 era.  Award of the oak leaves originally indicated extraordinary achievement in battle, and was usually reserved for high-ranking officers. By World War I, the oak leaves often indicated a second or higher award of the Pour le Mérite.  Includes 10" of neck ribbon.

Blue Max with Oak Leaves April 30, 2012
Reviewer: Thomas Forsgren from Niles, MI United States
Well executed medal.  Note on the ribbon .  The oak leaves to the Pour le Merite was instituted March l0, 1813.  The ribbon had two silver stripes.  On Dec. 17, 1817 the ribbon changed to three sripes having one down the middle. So it remained until the end of WWI The exception to this is Kaiser Wilhelm I who wore his on the two striped ribbon.
